Amanda Holden 'will dazzle crowds at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in Shrek'
Friday, 10 September 2010

Amanda Holden is a "really good fit" to play Princess Fiona in the West End adaptation of Shrek at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

This is according to the show's director Rob Ashford, who told the Daily Mail that the Britain's Got Talent judge has the right sense of humour to pull off the role.

Shrek is not due to open at the Theatre Royal until June 7th 2010, but theatre fans are already hotly anticipating the stage version of the hit Oscar-winning film.

Discussing what audiences can expect from Holden, Ashford said that she combines good looks with strong acting skills.

"She's not a porcelain doll. She looks like one, but she isn't. She doesn't take herself too seriously - and neither does Princess Fiona," he commented.

Holden will be starring alongside Nigel Lindsay, who is taking the title role of the green ogre, and comic Richard Blackwood as Donkey in the production.

In the animated film series, Cameron Diaz voiced Princess Fiona while Eddie Murphy used his comic talents to great effect as Donkey.

Oliver! star Kerry Ellis 'raises the roof' at Theatre Royal Drury Lane
Friday, 10 September 2010

Kerry Ellis, one of the stars of Theatre Royal Drury Lane show Oliver!, "raises the roof" whenever she performs.

This is the view of the Daily Mail's arts critic Baz Bamigboye, who praised the singer's "quiet, calm" voice and impressive stage presence.

In particular, he noted that her soprano tones can be adapted to rockier tunes without resorting to belting out big numbers.

Ellis is currently starring as Nancy in the hit West End show after taking over from Jodie Prenger, but has also wowed the crowds with stints in We Will Rock You and Wicked.

Bamigboye said he has kept a close eye on the starlet's progress in recent years and claimed that she is a "real artist" who commands respect from audiences.

"She's no manufactured wannabe from some reality TV show - she has worked her way to success the hard way," the expert remarked.

Other actors currently starring in the Theatre Royal Drury Lane production of Oliver! include comic Russ Abbott, who portrays Fagin, and Steven Hartley, who has taken the role of Bill Sikes.

Andrew Scott promises 'tender' performance in Old Vic Theatre's Design for Living
Friday, 10 September 2010

Those who buy theatre tickets for Noel Coward's Design for Living at the Old Vic Theatre can expect a tender display from lead Andrew Scott.

Speaking to the Metro, Scott said that his character Leo was partly based on Coward himself, which gives the production an extra dimension.

The play, which is coming to the Old Vic Theatre on September 15th 2010, tells the story of a love triangle featuring a troubled playwright.

Scott said that "tenderness" will be at the heart of his performance, rather than "blatant sexuality".

The actor - who recently wowed TV audiences with his portrayal of Moriarty in three-part BBC drama Sherlock - explained that the play will have a resonance with modern concerns.

He commented: "The relationship between your talent and your private life is a very modern thing for our internet generation and I do think it's important to keep them separate."

Design for Living has not been seen by London theatre fans for the past 15 years and was initially banned when Coward wrote it in 1933.

London theatre tickets to become available for Sondheim on Sondheim?
Thursday, 9 September 2010

Stephen Sondheim enthusiasts may be able to get their hands on London theatre tickets for a show paying tribute to him next year.

According to Variety, producer Sonia Friedman hopes to get the opportunity to work on Sondheim on Sondheim with a view to bringing it to the West End in spring 2011.

She said that although it is still early days, she would like to involve a rolling cast of big names in the musical, which features songs from the composer's back catalogue and one new tune interspersed with footage of him.

No potential venue has yet been revealed as a possible home for Sondheim on Sondheim in London.

In April 2010, Ben Brantley reviewed the Broadway version of the show for the New York Times.

He called it "a genial, multimedia commemorative scrapbook on the life, times and career of [Sondheim]" and said it is a must-see for his fans.

Stephen Sondheim turned 80 in March this year.

Niki Evans- I thought Blood Brothers was a rock musical!
Thursday, 9 September 2010

West End star Niki Evans has been speaking about how pleased she was to be given the chance to star in Blood Brothers.

The former X Factor contestant admitted to the Northern Echo that she thought the show was a rock musical when she was asked to audition for it and then went on to mess up her try-out.

Despite these setbacks, she was given the role of Mrs Johnstone and revealed it was one she really identified with, being a working class mother-of-two herself.

"I'm really, really grateful that people still want to come along and see me," Evans commented.

Tantalisingly, the 37-year-old said London theatre fans should look out for her in a musical next year which requires her to be blonde with "big boobs".

Last month, Blood Brothers was given a 12-month extension at the Phoenix Theatre, meaning it will now be booking until November 26th 2011.

Jonathan Groff 'makes an assured debut in Deathtrap'
Thursday, 9 September 2010

Jonathan Groff has been praised for his debut West End performance by one theatre critic.

Ian Shuttleworth of the Financial Times said the young actor and star of TV's Glee delivers an "assured" performance as up-and-coming playwright Clifford.

He also reported that Simon Russell Beale "enjoys himself" as jealous has-been Sidney thanks to a number of dead-pan one-liners.

Mr Shuttleworth said he was pleased to see that the play within a play references - the two main characters discuss a show named Deathtrap - were clever rather than "clever-clever".

Explaining that Matthew Warchus' direction is great at creating shock moments, the critic concluded by saying Deathtrap is "indubitably entertaining".

Last month, Groff told the Telegraph he was so keen to win a part in the comedy thriller that he dressed in a similar way to the character he was auditioning for when he went to read for the part in London.

Whoopi Goldberg to make dramatic return to Sister Act next month
Thursday, 9 September 2010

Whoopi Goldberg fans who did not get the chance to catch her in Sister Act may be delighted to know that she is to make a dramatic return to the musical.

The Hollywood star had been drawing in huge crowds during her stint as Mother Superior, but was forced to pull out and fly back home after her mother had a stroke.

Earlier this week, Goldberg revealed the elderly lady had passed away shortly after she reached her bedside.

However, it has now been reported that she is to return to the London Palladium to play the head nun on October 22nd to 23rd and October 25th 2010, for a strictly limited run of five performances.

This will come shortly before Sister Act's final closure in the West End on October 30th.

Goldberg created a fresh rush of interest in the musical and it achieved its highest-ever grossing week during August.

West End extension given to long-runner The Mousetrap
Thursday, 9 September 2010

Another extension has been given to West End stalwart The Mousetrap, a move which will see it head into its 59th year in London.

The play's official website states that theatre tickets will now be available for the murder mystery until at least May 14th 2011 at St Martin's Theatre.

It first opened on November 25th 1952 with Richard Attenborough in the lead role and has been delighting fans of whodunnits ever since.

There has never been a film adaptation because a condition of the rights sold more than 50 years ago states that production can only begin six months after the West End version ends - and it never has.

Anyone who goes to see The Mousetrap is asked not to reveal the murder culprit in order not to spoil it for other people.

However, Wikipedia was recently criticised for doing this within its article about the play, with Agatha Christie's grandson Matthew Prichard telling the Independent he thinks it is "a pity" the encyclopedia has chosen to publish the offending piece.ADNFCR-3104-ID-800058335-ADNFCR
London theatre tickets for special show 'to include Eliza Doolittle performance'
Wednesday, 8 September 2010

Fans of Eliza Doolittle may wish to get London theatre tickets for a one-night-only West End show in order to see her perform.

The pop singer is to take to the stage of the Garrick Theatre on September 12th 2010 with her mother Frances Ruffelle, who is starring in Beneath the Dress.

Ruffelle will sing in front of a six-piece band and the performance is billed as an exploration of her musical influences, including Kurt Weill and Cole Porter.

However, according to WhatsonStage.com, her daughter - real name Eliza Caird - will duet with her for at least one tune.

Sadie Frost will also join her for the song Best Friend, it has been reported.

It is not the first time Doolittle and Ruffelle have performed together - they once trod the boards in Les Miserables as Cosette and Eponine.

Meanwhile, Doolittle has told the Scottish Daily Record she is going to try to learn her hits including Skinny Genes in French, Chinese and Japanese for when the songs are released in those countries.

London theatre tickets for Betty Blue Eyes to be available next year?
Wednesday, 8 September 2010

It has been rumoured that London theatre tickets for new show Betty Blue Eyes could be available from spring next year.

WhatsonStage.com states that the musical - which is based on the 1984 film A Private Function - could come to the Novello Theatre in April 2011.

Sarah Lancashire and Reece Shearsmith are tipped for the lead roles played originally by Maggie Smith and Michael Palin, while Adrian Scarborough is said to be lined up for a supporting part.

A Private Function was a comedy that told the story of a little Yorkshire town in 1947, where local businessmen decided to illegally raise a pig to eat on the day of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip's wedding.

However, chaos ensued when the pig got stolen and a food inspector makes an appearance.

If real pigs are used in Betty Blue Eyes, the actors may have trouble controlling them - according to the Independent, Maggie Smith was forced to jump over one when it pinned her in a corner during the filming of a scene in A Private Function.

Deathtrap 'is sure to be a hit'
Wednesday, 8 September 2010

A theatre critic has said that new West End revival Deathtrap is an enjoyable evening's entertainment.

Henry Hitchings, writing for the London Evening Standard, commented that there are strong performances from the central cast members, especially Simon Russell Beale as Sidney.

However, Jonathan Groff and Claire Skinner were also praised for their "genial charm" and "suitably fussy" acting respectively.

Mr Hitchings said there is a lot of great detail in the presentation of Deathtrap, while the occasional moment of camp humour adds a welcome light touch.

"Its brand of unapologetically giddy entertainment makes it sure to be a hit," the critic concluded, giving the play four stars.

Earlier this month, Skinner told the Independent she was nervous, but also looking forward to treading the boards in Deathtrap.

She also said she thinks her role in the improvised BBC sitcom Outnumbered will help her with her character Myra.

Deathtrap is currently booking at the Noel Coward Theatre.ADNFCR-3104-ID-800057182-ADNFCR
Sheridan Smith of Legally Blonde is reunited with lost pet
Wednesday, 8 September 2010

Sheridan Smith, current star of musical Legally Blonde, has revealed she has been "crying with joy" after being reunited with her lost dog Enid.

The performer took to her Twitter page on Monday (September 6th 2010) to ask for information about the Shar Pei, but despite the message being reposted by thousands of people, she had no luck.

However, it has now been revealed that Enid is back at home after being found in Dagenham and taken to Battersea Dogs Home.

Luckily, staff there had seen the Twitter postings and heard Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles talking about Smith's plight, so realised whose dog they had found.

"I've got Enid back. I cannot thank you all enough for your help … I am so touched by the support and kindness of everyone," Smith said.

The news is sure to delight fans of Legally Blonde, who have warmly welcomed Smith in the role of Elle Woods due to her likeable, self-deprecating nature.

She once told the London Evening Standard she feels so lucky to have the role she feel like she is "blagging".

Former Sister Act star informs fans of mother's death
Wednesday, 8 September 2010

Former Sister Act star Whoopi Goldberg has informed her fans that her mother passed away following her recent stroke.

The performer, who was forced to pull out of the West End musical on August 27th 2010, flew home to be at her mother's bedside in the US.

However, she told viewers of her chat show The View yesterday (September 7th) that the elderly lady was unable to recover from the effects of the aneurysm and died on August 29th.

Paying tribute to her, Goldberg commented: "I don't think she quite realised how many lives she touched. She was an extraordinary woman."

The Hollywood movie star had been due to play Mother Superior in Sister Act until August 31st, but her understudies stepped in to cover her until Sally Dexter took over on September 2nd.

Sister Act will be showing at the London Palladium until October 30th this year, when it will close to make room for The Wizard of Oz.

Shoes musical to arrive at Peacock Theatre soon?
Tuesday, 7 September 2010

A musical about shoes by the people behind Jerry Springer - The Opera could be set to arrive at the Peacock Theatre soon.

Composer Richard Thomas said at a Q&A session hosted by WhatsonStage.com that plans are underway to bring Shoes to the West End venue for six to nine weeks in early 2011.

It would then go on a national tour, he explained.

Shoes is a song and dance revue that examines the styles of footwear that have captured the hearts of women over the years and was first revealed to London theatre fans in February 2010.

Anyone who goes to see it can expect to see fun poked at Carrie Bradshaw in the song Vex In The City, as well as at well-known shoe devotee Imelda Marcos in Imelda Marcos Argues With The Nation.

Speaking back in February, Mr Thomas commented: "Shoes is basically about joy - searching for it, finding it and losing it."

Clybourne Park 'could make a move to Theatre Royal Haymarket'
Tuesday, 7 September 2010

It has been speculated that new play Clybourne Park could soon be making its way to the West End.

The production, which only opened at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Downstairs on September 2nd 2010, may be heading to the Theatre Royal Haymarket in the coming months, according to WhatsonStage.com.

Written by Bruce Norris, Clybourne Park stars Martin Freeman and Sophie Thompson and is a study of racism in the property market. It tells the story of what happens when a white couple in the 1950s sell their home to a black couple and how it has repercussions many years later.

The Washington Post praised it for applying "a modern twist to the issues of race and housing and aspirations for a better life", while Henry Hitchings of the London Evening Standard gave it five stars and called it "achingly intelligent".

Sweet Charity is currently appearing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until December 2010.
