London Theatre News And Reviews!

Lauren Samuels- Grease is beyond my wildest dreams
Friday, 30 July 2010

Lauren Samuels, the new Sandy in West End musical Grease, has said appearing in the show is a dream come true.

The Over the Rainbow finalist had her opening night on Monday (July 26th 2010) and said she had to pinch herself to believe she really was a leading lady in a London theatre show, the Coventry Telegraph reports.

"I was so nervous. But at the end the whole audience were on their feet. It was beyond my wildest dreams," Samuels commented.

The performer said she first decided she wanted to be a West End star after watching The Phantom of the Opera with her mum as a child.

Samuels recently told the Leicester Mercury she felt as though she was going to be sick with nerves as she waited to go on stage for the first time, but added that the audience helped to allay her fears by singing along.

Hannah Waddingham to play witch in The Wizard of Oz?
Friday, 30 July 2010

It has been rumoured that stage actress Hannah Waddingham could be in line for a role in new West End musical The Wizard of Oz.

Currently playing a witch in Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, WhatsonStage.com reports that she could be set to take on the role of Wicked Witch of the East when Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical opens at the London Palladium next March.

Waddingham is best known for her appearances in Spamalot and A Little Night Music, which recently transferred to Broadway.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Sophie Evans - runner-up in BBC One's talent search Over the Rainbow - will also be joining The Wizard of Oz as a stand-in for winner Danielle Hope.

Evans will play Dorothy on Tuesday evenings, as well as during Hope's holidays.

Lord Lloyd Webber explained this is to make sure the girls are not overworked when the musical opens on March 1st 2011.

Legally Blonde cast to release musical soundtrack
Friday, 30 July 2010

Anyone who has seen the hit West End musical Legally Blonde will soon be able to sing along to its songs at home.

A soundtrack - recorded live at the Savoy Theatre - is to be released on August 16th 2010, with cast members including Sheridan Smith available to sign it on August 21st at Dress Circle on Monmouth Street, London.

The album will feature songs like Omigod You Guys, Bend and Snap, So Much Better and Whipped Into Shape, all sung by the current actors Smith, Richard Fleeshman (Warner), Jill Halfpenny (Paulette), Aoife Mulholland (Brooke) and many more.

Meanwhile, it has also been revealed that the last Sunday performance of Legally Blonde will take place on September 5th 2010 to make way for Tuesday performances beginning on September 14th.

Rumours reported by WhatsonStage.com earlier this month which suggested that Smith is to leave the role of Elle this autumn have not yet been confirmed.

Jonathan Groff in training for Deathtrap scenes
Friday, 30 July 2010

Jonathan Groff, one of the stars of the forthcoming play Deathtrap, has revealed the cast are currently rehearsing the fight scenes.

The Glee actor told theatre gossip columnist Baz Bamigboye of the Daily Mail he is trying to get fit for the role and is running in London's parks, riding his bike to the West End and working out in the gym when he is not rehearsing.

"At the moment, we're miming the combat scenes. We haven't used any of the real weapons yet. For now the handcuffs are made of duct tape," he commented.

Groff also said he leaves the Noel Coward Theatre each day with a headache after trying to get into the characters' minds in great detail.

Deathtrap opens officially on September 7th 2010 and in the meantime, Groff has been checking out other West End offerings such as War Horse, as well as hanging out with his friend Patina Miller from Sister Act.

First shown in 1978, Deathtrap is a thriller that was also made into a film starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve.

Amanda Holden 'has won role of Princess Fiona in Shrek'
Friday, 30 July 2010

People who buy London theatre tickets for Shrek next year will be able to see Amanda Holden playing Princess Fiona, it has been claimed.

The Daily Mail columnist Baz Bamigboye has reported that the production team was impressed with the Britain's Got Talent judge's acting, singing and dancing and has offered her the role.

Meanwhile, Shrek himself could be played by Guys and Dolls actor Nigel Lindsay and Lord Farquaad by Nigel Harman, the insider said.

Donkey will be played by one-time pop singer Richard Blackwood.

Although Holden has not yet formally signed the Shrek contract, she is thought to have agreed to accept the role verbally and will be starting rehearsals next spring.

She is no stranger to musicals, having starred in Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2003 to critical acclaim.

Shrek the Musical will open at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and is to replace Oliver!, which recently posted closing notices.ADNFCR-3104-ID-800008827-ADNFCR
Ghost Stories 'is a scary, funny must-see'
Thursday, 29 July 2010

Ghost Stories has been recommended to London theatre fans who are not of a nervous disposition.

Duncan Hepburn of the Hornsey and Crouch End Journal said the play - currently showing at the Duke of York's Theatre - is both terrifying and funny in equal measures.

He said while some parts of the story caused his fellow audience members to hide behind their coats, others made everyone laugh out loud.

"This ingeniously creepy and funny show is a must-see for those who don't mind a bit of a scare," the critic commented.

However, he added that his girlfriend wishes she had anticipated how frightening Ghost Stories would be, as she is only just getting over the scares now.

One celebrity who was reportedly as terrified of the play as Mr Hepburn's girlfriend was Dougie Poynter of McFly.

Bandmate Harry Judd told the Daily Star he was so scared that he stared at the floor throughout the entire performance.

The audience 'is an integral part of Legally Blonde'
Thursday, 29 July 2010

People who have bought London theatre tickets for Legally Blonde have been praised for their enthusiastic nature by one critic who recently went to see the musical.

Writing for the Guardian, Lyn Gardner said while Sheridan Smith in the lead role is "still giving 110 per cent", so are the members of the audience.

"There were Mexican waves in the dress circle and an engagement with what was happening on stage that was touching in its intensity," she commented.

Ms Gardner went on to say the audience is an integral part of Legally Blonde, particularly when they respond to key aspects like Warner's villainy with gusto.

Earlier this week, Ben Brantley of the New York Times credited Smith as Elle Woods for making the musical so infectious.

He said the actress has impeccable comic timing and a charming quality which makes the audience smile whenever she does.

Legally Blonde is currently booking at the Savoy Theatre.

Shirley Valentine and Educating Rita 'are both unmissably good'
Thursday, 29 July 2010

Trafalgar Studios 1 plays Shirley Valentine and Educating Rita have both been recommended by a London theatre critic.

Dominic Cavendish, reviewing both for the Telegraph, said they are "unmissably good".

He commented that Meera Syal and Laura Dos Santos as Shirley and Rita respectively offer up "two of the finest female performances to be found on the London stage", with both warm, likeable and charismatic.

Mr Cavendish also praised writer Willy Russell for putting the shows together, saying the scripts are spot-on.

The critic concluded by giving both plays four stars and labelling them "highly recommended".

Anyone who enjoys Shirley Valentine and Educating Rita could check out Blood Brothers, which was also penned by Willy Russell.

This tells the story of two twin brothers who are separated at birth because their mother is too poor to care for them both.

They meet up later in life without realising they are related, but events take a shattering turn after they both fall for the same girl.

Burn the Floor 'makes it impossible to sit still'
Thursday, 29 July 2010

Burn the Floor has been recommended to London theatre fans as a result of its stunning dance moves.

Writing for the Stage, critic Sarah Wilkinson said the dancers - including Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna - possess "stunning techniques" and project real passion via their moves.

She said their footwork in the show, which opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre on Monday (July 26th 2010), is compelling to watch.

"Their enthusiasm for the choreography is infectious, their love of dance insatiable. Several numbers move beyond toe-tapping, making it near impossible to sit still," Ms Wilkinson added.

She recommended that anyone who likes dance should get London theatre tickets to see it, as the performances are first-rate throughout.

Burn the Floor certainly impressed choreographer Louie Spence this week, who took to his Twitter page after attending the first showing to write: "God it's on fire. It's so HOT!"

The dance spectacular is currently booking until September 4th 2010.

Billy Elliot writer joins calls to protect Arts Council England funding
Wednesday, 28 July 2010

Lee Hall, the writer behind stage and screen smash hit Billy Elliot, has added his voice to calls for the government not to cut funding for Arts Council England (ACE).

As part of its drive to cut spending in the UK, the coalition has said its Department for Culture, Media and Sport may have to factor in cuts of 25 to 30 per cent for the ACE, potentially cutting funding from £12 million to £7 million.

Mr Hall has insisted this would be a "cultural disaster".

"Theatre in Britain is an economic powerhouse. The VAT on the West End alone brings in more than the subsidy. It's crazy and short-sighted to cut off the blood supply," he added.

The writer was part of the team that helped to scoop a record-breaking ten Tony Awards for Billy Elliot in 2009.

It is currently booking until April 9th 2011 at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

Shirley Valentine 'is entertaining and enjoyable'
Wednesday, 28 July 2010

Shirley Valentine has been recommended to London theatre fans by one critic who recently went to see it.

Writing for London Theatre Guide, Peter Brown said the play is great fun and has some really moving moments.

It tells the story of a middle-aged housewife named Shirley (Meera Syal) who is unhappy with her lot in life, but is offered the chance to get away from it all with a girls-only holiday in Greece.

Mr Brown said Syal is thoroughly entertaining and manages to completely hold her own in the one-woman show.

"Ms Syal's excellent comic timing makes sure that all Willy Russell's lines hit the mark spot on and her bubbly personality draws us all in like a magnet," he enthused.

The critic concluded by calling Shirley Valentine an entertaining and enjoyable play and encouraged people to go and see it.

Shirley Valentine is currently booking at Trafalgar Studios 1 until October 30th 2010.

Lauren Samuels- I was blown away by Grease reception
Wednesday, 28 July 2010

Lauren Samuels - who shot to fame in TV talent search Over the Rainbow - has said she was thrilled with the audience's response after she joined the cast of Grease this week.

The 22-year-old is playing the lead role of Sandy and she told the Leicester Mercury she was incredibly nervous while waiting in the wings for the first time on Monday (July 26th 2010).

"I felt like I could throw up as I was waiting to go on stage," she commented.

However, once the show began, Samuels said those who had bought London theatre tickets to see it really helped to ease her nerves.

"They were singing along and clapping, which was great," she enthused.

The young performer added that her dressing room is like a flower shop now after she received bouquets from all her friends and family.

Grease - which also stars former Hear'Say singer Noel Sullivan - is currently booking at the Piccadilly Theatre until September 3rd 2011.

Ali Bastian turns heads after Burn the Floor opening night
Wednesday, 28 July 2010

Ali Bastian has been working hard to prepare for new West End show Burn the Floor and it showed on Monday (July 26th 2010) when she attended the opening night after-party.

The former Hollyoaks actress turned heads in a figure-hugging Herve Leger bandage dress which really showed off her dance-honed thighs outside the Shaftesbury Theatre.

She was joined by co-star and real life boyfriend Brian Fortuna, as well as a host of other celebrities who had come to check out the show.

They included Roxanne Pallett, Ricky Whittle, Craig Revel Horwood and Arlene Phillips.

Louis Spence, a regular at West End red carpet events, also turned up to praise Bastian for her moves.

Earlier this month, Fortuna told the Sun he was excited about the prospect of starting Burn the Floor, but also a little sad to have left Strictly Come Dancing behind, as it was where he first got together with Bastian.

Barbara Windsor- I'd like to do a musical now
Wednesday, 28 July 2010

After filming her final scenes for EastEnders earlier this month, Barbara Windsor is now reportedly keen to try her hand at London theatre again.

The veteran actress - Peggy Mitchell in the long-running soap - has not appeared on stage for a number of years, but had roles in musicals such as Sing a Rude Song and Oh, What a Lovely War! in her youth.

Now, according to WhatsonStage.com, Windsor is "looking at new options", commenting: "I quite like the idea of doing a musical."

However, she did not drop a hint as to which show she would be keen to star in.

A number of former soap stars have been appearing in West End shows lately, including Jason Donovan, who starred in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert until last month.

Meanwhile, Anna Friel took a role in Breakfast at Tiffany's last year and Ali Bastian of Hollyoaks fame is now appearing in Burn the Floor.

Tom Cruise- I'd love to appear in London's West End
Tuesday, 27 July 2010

Tom Cruise has said he would love to appear on the stages of London's West End if he got the opportunity.

The actor - who is in the UK to promote new film Knight and Day with Cameron Diaz - told the London Evening Standard he would love to make his theatre debut over here.

Speaking as he signed autographs in Leicester Square, he commented: "I'd really like to do the stage at some point - we'll see."

However, his co-star Diaz has no such ambitions. Although the Telegraph quotes her as saying she dearly loves London, the actress also said she is not considering a theatrical role and is sure she would get terrible stage fright.

One Hollywood actor currently enjoying a sting in London's West End is Jeff Goldblum, who has received praise from critics for his part in The Prisoner of Second Avenue.

Meanwhile, Whoopi Goldberg will make her West End debut next month when she joins Sister Act for its final few weeks.
