Toto dogs in The Wizard of Oz impress critic
Wednesday, 2 March 2011
The new production of The Wizard of Oz might be a dazzling affair with a revolving stage and characters that drop in from the ceiling, but one critic has said he was most impressed by the real-life animals used in the show.
Writing for the Daily Mail, Quentin Letts said he was blown away by the good behaviour of the four West Highland terriers who play the role of Toto, as they did what they were required to "without straying, scratching or so much as a hint of cocked leg".
However, the journalist also praised Danielle Hope for her "clear, strong voice" in the role of Dorothy and Hannah Waddingham as the Wicked Witch of the West, whom he described as "almost unrecognisable".
Mr Letts said he was largely pleased by The Wizard of Oz, although he did argue that Michael Crawford was underused despite him playing four parts including the Wizard himself.
According to the Telegraph, Bobbie, Topper, Razzle and Dazzle are the dogs who play Toto, even though a schnauzer called Dangerous Dave was originally chosen.
