London theatre tickets news Flare Path semi autobiographical
Monday, 28 February 2011
The director of Flare Path at the Theatre Royal Sir Trevor Nunn has described how it came as something of a surprise to hear that the story was inspired by real experiences.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Sir Trevor explained he had not realised the wartime action was semi-autobiographical for playwright Terence Rattigan.
"I didn't know, for example, that Rattigan was in Coastal Command, that he flew missions and that he was a gunner and radio operator," he told the publication.
Sir Trevor described how Rattigan actually faced the prospect of plummeting to his death when a plane he was in looked like it would need to "ditch".
In his view, it is "extraordinary" that the writer salvaged the script for Flare Path from that same flight.
Flare Path boasts a star-studded cast, with Sienna Miller, Sheridan Smith and James Purefoy all set to appear in the production, which premieres on March 10th 2011.
