Carol Kane notes 'what ifs' in The Children's Hour
Thursday, 24 February 2011
One of the stars of The Children's Hour has pointed out that there is not just one tipping point towards tragedy in the story.
Carol Kane, who plays Aunt Lily in the acclaimed interpretation of Lillian Hellman's play at the Comedy Theatre, told Broadway.com there are a million 'what ifs' over the course of the tale.
In her opinion, tragedy could have been averted several times if characters had behaved differently.
The Children's Hour sees two teachers' careers and lives ruined by a rumour they are lesbian lovers.
Kane described how the director of the play, Ian Rickson, has been a huge inspiration to the whole cast.
"[He] worked very hard to give the opening scenes a lightness - to let the kids be kids - so that you at least start out with a degree of hope," the 58-year-old actress told the online resource.
Rickson served as artistic director at the Royal Court Theatre from 1998 to 2006.
