The Wizard of Oz 'contains some of the greatest songs ever'
Thursday, 24 February 2011
Andrew Lloyd Webber has claimed The Wizard of Oz boasts a handful of the greatest songs of all time.
Among the tunes that feature in the production at the London Palladium are Over the Rainbow, We're Off to See the Wizard and Follow the Yellow Brick Road.
However, Lloyd Webber told the Daily Telegraph that it was not simple to create a successful version of the tale, adding: "As soon as Jeremy Sams - the director - and I started to look at The Wizard of Oz, we could see that theatrically it would need a lot of work to pull it together."
The songs are known by generations of people and he believes they are up there with the best.
Lloyd Webber went on to suggest previous productions have not fulfilled the potential of the story.
The lead in the musical at the London Palladium will be Danielle Hope, who won the television show Over the Rainbow to gain her place in the cast.
