Anna Nicole 'is fabulous'
Tuesday, 22 February 2011
New production Anna Nicole has been deemed a success by one reviewer, who suggested it has brought unheard-of levels of glamour and hype to the Royal Opera House.
Based on the life of Anna Nicole Smith and written by the librettist behind Jerry Springer: the Opera, the show has been the talk of the town over the past few weeks and it finally received its premiere last week.
Guardian reviewer Fiona Maddocks remarked that she cannot remember an opera in Covent Garden generating this type of interest in living memory.
"It opened on Thursday [Feburary 17th] after a near fatal overdose of hype and a hurricane of enthusiasm for its rags-to-richesse-to-tristesse American playgirl subject matter," she noted.
In her opinion, the production is "fabulous" and delivers a great night out, with the title role played impressively by Eva-Maria Westbroek.
During her lifetime, Smith was never far from the media's attention and ultimately died of a drug overdose in 2007.
