Legally Blonde cleans up at awards ceremony
Monday, 21 February 2011
The popularity of West End musical Legally Blonde was underlined at an awards ceremony, with the Savoy Theatre production taking home four gongs.
Sheridan Smith, who has received plenty of plaudits for her portrayal of lead character Elle Woods, co-presented the Whatsonstage.com occasion and was handed one of the top prizes on the night.
She was named best actress in a musical, while Jill Halfpenny received the corresponding accolade for best supporting actress for her part as the hairdresser Paulette.
In addition to these two honours, Legally Blonde was victorious in the choreography category and was awarded the best new musical gong.
The production, which is based on the Reese Witherspoon film of the same name, arrived in the West End after a successful run on Broadway.
It is a feel-good story that follows the fortunes of a homecoming queen who gets into Harvard Law School and makes an impression in her own unique way.
