Les Miserables orchestra to be expanded
Friday, 18 February 2011
The orchestra that plays the music for the production of Les Miserables in the West End is to be enlarged, according to producer Cameron Mackintosh.
Musicians who are already in the 11-strong orchestra will have to audition again for their places and an extra three spots will be opening up, reports the Stage.
Mr Mackintosh told the online publication: "I am terrifically grateful to the current orchestra for the work they have done over the years and I hope that as many of them as possible will be able to remain with us for the next stage of the show's life."
However, he added that he might have to make personnelchanges and that the show and the audience had to come first.
The changes are being made because there is a new updated score, which has extra doubling and trebling.
Earlier this month, Matt Lucas was given a six-month contract to play the villain Thenardier in the production of Les Miserables at the Queen's Theatre in the West End.
