Harriet Thorpe I love appearing in Mamma Mia!
Thursday, 27 January 2011
West End stage actress Harriet Thorpe has said she loves appearing as Tanya in Mamma Mia!.
In an interview with Broadway.com, she said it is great fun to play a glamorous woman who has lived all over the world and is extremely witty.
"As an actress performing her, I get to dance around with a lot of very hot young men: It's a tough day at the office," she laughed.
Thorpe also joked that she was glad to have won the part, because she was concerned about being typecast as someone who could only play crazy women - she previously appeared as a witch in Wicked and a baddie in Harry Potter too.
The performer said she was glad when the film version of Mamma Mia! opened it up to new audiences, but pointed out that people who see the stage production will see it as a completely different entity with bigger song and dance routines.
Mamma Mia! moved from the Prince Edward Theatre where it made its debut in 1999 to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004 and has remained there ever since.
