Musicals 'should still connect with London theatre tickets buyers'
Wednesday, 19 January 2011
Musicals should always connect with London theatre tickets buyers, rather than being so over-managed that they come over as all the same.
This is according to Dan Rebellato of the Guardian, who acknowledged that stage shows such as Wicked and The Lion King are essentially pleasure machines that are designed to exhilarate audiences.
However, he pointed out that every night should be unique and feel as though it is happening "only for you".
"Those of us who work in theatre tend to think what is distinctive about the form is its unrepeatability, its liveness," Mr Rebellato commented.
The expert suggested creators of musicals should move back away from having performers connected up to microphones - and unable to add spontaneity - as this will help them to better connect with those watching.
Musicals are currently proving more popular than ever, with both Wicked and The Lion King announcing record-breaking takings in recent weeks.
