Buying London theatre tickets 'is a way of escaping from economic woes'
Thursday, 13 January 2011
British people are buying London theatre tickets as a means of escapism, the authors of a new report have suggested.
A poll by Mintel discovered that while 43 per cent of those who go to the pub and 38 per cent of restaurant enthusiasts have cut down on the amount they spend, only 21 per cent of theatregoers have done the same.
Furthermore, five per cent of theatre fans reported they intend to see more plays and musicals in the future, the Stage reports.
"The performing arts benefit from the same prevailing trends as cinema, in that they are perceived as a way of escaping from the tyranny of value, cutting back and saving," explained the report's author Michael Oliver.
He added that theatre visits have also been boosted in numbers by staycations over the past couple of years.
This comes after it was revealed that The Lion King broke West End records by earning more than £34 million in 2010.
