The Lion King 'is kaleidoscopically brilliant'
Thursday, 6 January 2011
Theatre fans hoping to see a true spectacle when they head to the capital should consider Julie Taymor's acclaimed production of The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre.
Michael Billington, writing for the Guardian, suggested that those thinking of buying London theatre tickets could choose The Lion King for its "kaleidoscopic" visual presentation, which sets it apart from other versions of the popular tale.
He said that Taymor, an experimental director, was able to take ideas from various different cultures in order to create an "international theatrical language" which can be enjoyed by everyone.
"Out of Africa came the idea of lion masks perched above the actors' heads. From the Japanese bunraku tradition came visibly manipulated puppets," he explained.
The Lion King set a record for West End ticket sales for the second year in a row in 2010, with more than £34 million taken in by the box office over the 12-month period.
