The Lion King celebrates a milestone in New York
Thursday, 30 December 2010
The musical version of The Lion King in New York - which spawned the London production still running at the Lyceum Theatre - is celebrating a milestone in terms of the number of performances it has notched up.
On January 2nd 2011, it will become the seventh longest-running show ever to be seen on Broadway, passing the previous holder of the title Beauty and the Beast.
This means it is not too far behind Les Miserables in third place, Cats in second position and The Phantom of the Opera, which currently occupies the top spot.
Meanwhile, The Lion King in London celebrated 11 years in the West End in October 2010, making it the ninth longest-running show ever.
According to Broadway World, it has been seen by more than 8.5 million people.
Both the West End and Broadway versions of the production are based on the original Disney movie, which was released in 1994 to widespread critical acclaim.
