Theatre Royal Drury Lane confirmed as Olivier Awards venue
Monday, 29 November 2010
It has been confirmed that the Theatre Royal Drury Lane is to be the venue for the 2011 Laurence Olivier Awards.
The theatre - which is currently home to Oliver! and will soon be welcoming Shrek the Musical - will host the prestigious ceremony on March 13th 2011, with "extensive" coverage supporting it on the BBC.
It was chosen because it is the perfect location for staging entertainment provided by the BBC Concert Orchestra.
Society of London Theatre president Nica Burns commented: "We are thrilled that the Oliviers are back in such a beautiful and historic theatre, which is symbolic of the central part that theatre has played in the life of the capital since Shakespeare's day."
She added that she expects the awards to be a triumph.
The list of nominees for the Oliviers will be announced in February next year and the Radio 2 Audience Award for the Most Popular Show is to be open to the public for the first time.
Previously known as the Society of West End Theatre Awards, the Laurence Olivier Awards began life in 1984.
