The Woman in Black author Ghosts have to have a motive
Monday, 1 November 2010
Susan Hill, the author of The Woman in Black, has insisted that ghosts must have a motive in order to be convincing and frightening.
Speaking to the Telegraph, the prolific writer said she likes the idea of disturbed souls who wander around with unfinished business, but hates spooks who simply walk through walls and ride horses headlessly.
"There is a kind of pointlessness about them. They just go on doing it. You think, why? I call them 'so what?’ ghosts," she explained.
Ms Hill jokingly revealed she calls The Woman in Black - which has been running at the West End's Fortune Theatre for 21 years - her pension thanks to its continuing popularity.
It was revealed last month that Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe had begun shooting his first scenes for the film version of The Woman in Black, which sees him take on the role of solicitor Arthur Kipps.
