Baz Luhrmann working on Strictly Ballroom musical
Friday, 24 September 2010
Baz Luhrmann has said he is working on a stage musical version of Strictly Ballroom, his hit 1992 movie.
The director is to helm the project himself and is working with Sydney-based Global Creatures to organise the production.
Although the show will first be staged in Sydney, London theatre fans are no doubt hoping the new version of Strictly Ballroom will follow in the footsteps of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and transfer to the UK.
Mr Luhrmann said he is "energised" about the new developments after years of talking about bringing his creation to the theatre.
"Strictly Ballroom has always been very personal to me," he added.
However, fans may have some time to wait, as the new show may not be ready in Australia for around another two years.
In the meantime, Priscilla is still booking at the Palace Theatre, while Dirty Dancing and the forthcoming Flashdance may pacify those who enjoy dance-based performances.
