West End extension given to long runner The Mousetrap
Thursday, 9 September 2010
Another extension has been given to West End stalwart The Mousetrap, a move which will see it head into its 59th year in London.
The play's official website states that theatre tickets will now be available for the murder mystery until at least May 14th 2011 at St Martin's Theatre.
It first opened on November 25th 1952 with Richard Attenborough in the lead role and has been delighting fans of whodunnits ever since.
There has never been a film adaptation because a condition of the rights sold more than 50 years ago states that production can only begin six months after the West End version ends - and it never has.
Anyone who goes to see The Mousetrap is asked not to reveal the murder culprit in order not to spoil it for other people.
However, Wikipedia was recently criticised for doing this within its article about the play, with Agatha Christie's grandson Matthew Prichard telling the Independent he thinks it is "a pity" the encyclopedia has chosen to publish the offending piece.
