Whoopi Goldberg forced to cut short run in Sister Act
Friday, 27 August 2010
Whoopi Goldberg has been forced to pull out of her remaining performances in Sister Act after her mother was taken suddenly ill.
The 54-year-old took to the stage last night (August 26th 2010), but has flown home to the US today after receiving news that her elderly mother had suffered a stroke.
Anyone with London theatre tickets to the show is advised that her understudies Helen Walsh and Verity Quade will be stepping in to cover Goldberg's last six shows until Sally Dexter can step in as planned on September 2nd.
The Hollywood actress had been scheduled to appear in Sister Act until August 31st.
"Ms Goldberg is very sorry not to be able to perform as planned and the thoughts and sincere best wishes of the entire Sister Act company are with her at this difficult time," said a spokesperson for the London Palladium show.
Goldberg had been receiving rave reviews for her portrayal of Mother Superior, with Charles Spencer of the Telegraph recently describing her as being "surprisingly touching".
