The Country Girl 'is startlingly good'
Thursday, 26 August 2010
A critic has been reviewing The Country Girl ahead of its impending arrival in the West End.
The play will open at the Apollo Theatre on October 6th 2010, succeeding the critically-acclaimed All My Sons in the same venue.
Christopher Gray of the Oxford Times said The Country Girl is a "startlingly good" version of a US stage regular, which sees its actors looking at home on the stage.
The play stars Jenny Seagrove and Martin Shaw - of Judge John Deed fame - and tells the story of an alcoholic actor whose career appears washed up, but is then given one last chance to resurrect his career.
Mr Gray commented: "The action speeds along under director Rufus Norris, with the behind-the-scenes atmosphere of a 1950s theatre nicely caught."
The Country Girl is currently booking until February 2011, when it will be followed into the Apollo Theatre by Noel Coward's comedy Blithe Spirit.
