The Wizard of Oz celebrates its 71st birthday
Thursday, 12 August 2010
Today (August 12th 2010) could be a good day to buy London theatre tickets for The Wizard of Oz.
That's because it is the 71st anniversary of the release of the original film starring Judy Garland, which premiered in Wisconsin in 1939.
In order to mark the milestone, internet search giant Google has adorned its homepage with an Oz-themed Google Doodle depicting Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion following the yellow brick road.
The Wizard of Oz has become one of the most popular musical films of all time since it was adapted from the 1900 novel written by L Frank Baum.
It has now also been made into a West End musical that will arrive at the London Palladium in March 2011.
Meanwhile, Wicked, which tells the story of Oz's witches before they meet Dorothy, is continuing to delight London theatre fans at the Apollo Victoria Theatre.
It is also to be turned into a movie produced by Universal, Deadline revealed last month.
