Theatre critic I screamed four or five times during Ghost Stories

Monday, 9 August 2010

Ghost Stories had the desired effect on one theatre critic who went to see the play at the Duke of York's Theatre recently.

Writing for the New York Times, Ben Brantley said he found the show to be effective and frightening.

"I screamed three times. OK, maybe it was four or five. And I bruised my elbow against an armrest from (how embarrassing) jumping out of my seat," he admitted.

Mr Brantley added that while horror fans could rely upon scary movies to have them jumping out of their skin, he finds it much more effective and even cosy to be frightened by live actors.

The critic declined to give any more information lest he give away the Ghost Stories plot, which is top-secret.

Another play in which those who buy London theatre tickets are asked not to reveal the plot afterwards is murder mystery The Mousetrap, which has been running continuously in the capital since 1952.
