London theatre tickets for Sundays 'may become a thing of the past'
Friday, 6 August 2010
London theatre tickets could become a "thing of the past" for those visiting the city on a Sunday, it has been suggested.
What's On Stage reports the popular musical adaptation of the Reese Witherspoon film Legally Blonde will cease to take place on a Sunday from September onwards, following the example of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, which similarly, is to stop showing on a Sunday from September 20th 2010.
The National Theatre first pioneered Sunday matinee shows in 2008 in the hope of putting London on a par with the theatre districts of New York, Berlin and Paris, where such shows are very much the norm.
At the time, Nicholas Hytner, director of the prestigious theatre, told the Daily Telegraph: "We are a public service organisation and we know that people who work hard during the week want to go to the theatre on Sunday afternoons."
However, London theatregoers will no doubt be encouraged to hear The Lion King musical is still showing on a Sunday, with ticket and dinner combination packages available for those keen to secure a good deal.
