Women 'are going crazy for London theatre tickets'
Tuesday, 3 August 2010
London theatre tickets are increasingly being bought by women keen to have a fun night out with their friends.
According to a Society of London Theatre poll cited by the Independent, 68 per cent of those heading to the West End to watch a play or musical in 2008 were female.
Choreographer Arlene Phillips - who is now working on Flashdance the Musical - told the publication there is currently an "explosion" of female-friendly shows around and that groups of women are realising they could have a great alternative to pubs and clubs in the theatre.
"It is the women audiences who go back again and again that are keeping these musicals on in the West End," she explained.
The former Strictly come Dancing judge added that the crowds of cheering girls on Friday and Saturday nights are "something new" compared to the sombre audiences of the past.
Musicals which female fans could consider buying London theatre tickets for may include Legally Blonde, Dirty Dancing and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, all of which are now showing in the West End.
