Phantom of the Opera 'is fascinating because of his darkness'
Is The Phantom of the Opera murderous or misunderstood?
Tuesday, 25 May 2010
The tortured soul that is The Phantom of the Opera is fascinating to watch because he is such a dark character, one actress has said.
Margaret Preece, who played Carlotta in the musical back in 2000, said it is interesting to consider whether the Phantom is the way he is because he is psychotic or just misunderstood.
However, she told Broadway World she thinks that although he was once a victim, he is now so bitter that he has become simply murderous.
"He is so full of bile and hatred towards his fellow man that he has only glimmers of compassion and kindness left in him," she explained.
Phantom of the Opera is still wowing audiences at Her Majesty's Theatre more than two decades after it first opened.
Meanwhile, sequel Love Never Dies opened at the Adelphi Theatre earlier this year, picking up the action ten years after the final scene of the first musical.
